Dr. Bernard Canlas completed his residency in anesthesiology and was chief resident his senior year at the University of Louisville Hospitals. He obtained his fellowship in pain medicine at the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He is recognized as the first physician in Southeast Asia to implant the Medtronic 5-6-5 tripole lead, and he is the first physician to implant a spinal cord stimulator system in the Philippines. Dr. Canlas is the course director of the annual pain continuing medical education (CME) symposium held at Memorial Hospital. He has presented scientific posters and published articles in the field of neuromodulation. He has lectured internationally, including at the Association for Southeast Asian Pain societies (ASEAPS) and is the only pain medicine physician to lecture on cancer pain management at the Pacific Cancer Conference in Guam sponsored by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Canlas holds three board certifications in the United States: Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology; Pain Medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine. He holds two board certifications in the Philippines: Anesthesiology by the Philippine Board of Anesthesia; Examiner–Pain Medicine by the Philippine Board of Pain Medicine.
