Dr. Bernard Canlas completed his residency in anesthesiology and was chief resident his senior year at the University of Louisville Hospitals. He obtained his fellowship in pain medicine at the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He is recognized as the first physician in Southeast Asia to implant the Medtronic 5-6-5 tripole lead, and he is the first physician to implant a spinal cord stimulator system in the Philippines. Dr. Canlas is the course director of the annual pain continuing medical education (CME) symposium held at Memorial Hospital. He has presented scientific posters and published articles in the field of neuromodulation. He has lectured internationally, including at the Association for Southeast Asian Pain societies (ASEAPS) and is the only pain medicine physician to lecture on cancer pain management at the Pacific Cancer Conference in Guam sponsored by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Canlas holds three board certifications in the United States: Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology; Pain Medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine. After completing his training at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School) in 2007, Dr. Bates joined Jacksonville’s Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical Associates. As Medical Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Orange Park Medical Center, Dr Bates founded its cardiothoracic surgery program in December 2010 and it is the only program in Northeast Florida to be awarded the highest rating for patient outcomes by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for three years in a row. He is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Bates performed the first robotic lung surgery in Northeast Fllorida three years ago and made history again on April 14 by performing the region’s first robotic assisted mitral valve repair. Before now, patients have had to travel more than 300 miles to get this state-of-the-art, minimally invasive valve surgery. Patients seek this treatment because (compared to traditional mitral valve surgery) there is less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activities. Using the da Vinci robotic system, Dr. Bates controls the machine with his hands and feet while his surgical team monitors the patient’s vitals. Bates has a clear view to the heart throughout the entire surgery. “My vision is for patients in Northeast Florida to no longer have to leave Florida to get this done,” says Bates.

Founded in 2001 by Dr. R. David Heekin, Heekin Orthopedic Specialists has established their group as a different kind of orthopedic practice. Unlike some organizations, all of the doctors at Heekin Orthopedic Specialists are fellowship-trained in their area of specialty. ‘Fellowship-trained’ requires a voluntary, additional year of preparation and skill refinement post orthopedic residency to become an expert in a desired area. Dr. Tan is Board Certified by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has been the Medical Director of
Occupational and Rehabilitation Center (ORC) in greater Jacksonville, Florida since 1997. He finished his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (RIRM) in New York City. He was recognized with an “Outstanding Contribution Award” from RIRM at the United Nations in New York City after the publication of his medical textbook, Practical Manual of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: Diagnostics, Therapeutics and Basic Problems. Both the first and second editions of Dr. Tan’s textbook have been used at medical schools and PM&R residency training programs in the United States and abroad. He has authored chapters in other medical textbooks and his research papers have been published in numerous scientific and medical journals. He has also lectured on various PM&R and physical therapy topics in the U.S. and in Asia. Prior to becoming a medical doctor, Dr. Tan received his PhD in physical therapy from New York University and was a practicing physical therapist at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. As a PM&R doctor (also called Physiatrist), Dr. Tan focuses on treating physical impairments (e.g., neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain) resulting from injury or disease. He helps patients develop a comprehensive non-invasive rehabilitation program to put the patient’s life back together. At his three clinics, Dr. Tan and his team of physical therapists help:
• Diagnose and treat muskuloskeletal and neuromuscular injuries
• Restore function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions
• Treat the whole person, not just the problem area.
